Is our teaching/learning comprehensively biblical and Christian?

Many Christian school leaders are concerned that significant numbers of teachers are not properly equipped to be comprehensively Christian and biblical in the preparation and leadership of their teaching/learning programs.  This is a difficult issue because most teachers are trained in secular universities, and there is very little commercial quality curriculum material written from a Biblical Christian perspective.  In addition, the pressure to implement the Australian curriculum consumes most of the energy and time teachers need to thoughtfully prepare comprehensively biblical and christian curriculum.  As a result, many fear that many of our young people are not consistently being taught to think God’s way in their studies.  We as a Christian schools movement, therefore, may be proven to be ineffective in properly meeting the commitments of our mission statements to teach a biblical Christian curriculum. curriculum.

What can we do?

Equipping Christian Schools provides materials and training to assist teachers and curriculum leaders to gain the skills to create consistently and comprehensively biblical Christian curriculum in the context of the new Australian national curriculum.

Over recent years, we have seen have seen many teachers become excited about their development of understanding and skills in preparing and teaching their curriculum in a biblical Christian perspective.  All it takes is some engaging input to challenge the consistency of their thinking, and some training in a curriculum writing paradigm that keeps biblical Christian faith and worldview in focus while meeting the requirements of state or national curriculum.

The following publications, seminars and programs are available:

1.    Published materials:

  • Rubber on the Road Christian Thinking  (& Study Guide) – This text is a “layman’s” guide to how a Christian can have a philosophy and worldview that is beautifully coherent and consistent with Christian faith and biblical revelation.  The text also helps the reader to commence the process of thinking biblically about the “rubber on the road” issues that we face in life and learning, and in the development of curriculum documents.  (Click here for a sample of Rubber on the Road Christian Thinking).

  • 4C’s Curriculum Writing Guide – This guide takes the teacher step-by-step through a process of preparing a curriculum unit which consistently applies biblical truth to every aspect of the curriculum from global aims through to the “rubber-on-the-road” teaching/learning activities of the classroom. (Click here for a sample of the 4C’s Curriculum Writing Guide).

2.    Seminar/Workshops:

WE have several curriculum development seminar/workshops designed to train teachers to write consistently Christian curriculum:

  1. Short Inspirational Introduction – This is a 1.5 to 2 hour seminar that gets teachers inspired about the need to build their thinking and curriculum around biblical truth.  This seminar is ideal for an after school staff meeting or professional learning time.

  2. Full day seminar – This program takes teachers deeper into an understanding of building their thinking and curriculum consistently with their Christian faith and biblical truth.  This seminar is ideal for a staff retreat or pupil-free professional learning day.The benefits of this seminar are greatly enhanced if the participants complete the provided per-semionar reading and reflection exercise.
  3. Staff “study group” Workshops – A number of schools have used the text and study guide Rubber on the Road Christian Thinking to have their teachers work in “study groups” for a weekly professional learning time over 10 -15 weeks.  This process has helped the teachers to gain understanding and confidence in biblical truth in its application to their curriculum.
  4. Full day curriculum unit-writing seminar/workshop – This seminar/workshop is best done after programs 1 and/or 2 have been completed because it uses the foundations developed in Rubber on the Road Christian Thinking text to practically help teachers to develop consistently Christian curriculum units.  Using the 4C’s Curriculum Writing Guide  teachers participating in this seminar will develop a real unit of work that thoroughly reflects biblical foundations.
  5. Being Transformed by the Renewing of your Mind - strand 1 - This is a 35-hour  seminar and private study "short course" involving 15 hours of seminars, the completion of the Rubber on the Road Christian Thinking study guide, and the preparation and presentation of a paper addressing an issue of personal or professional significance to the writer/presenter.  Click here to see the course details.

3.    Commercial Christian Curriculum Writing Project:

This project is currently at proposal stage and awaits the commitment of key stakeholders and participants.

The proposal is to co-opt a group of specialist teachers in each curriculum area, train them to write curriculum materials which consistently and comprehensively express a Biblical Christian Worldview, then facilitate their commercial development and distribution.  To see the 2013 draft proposal click here.
